In Vitro Wettability of Hydrogel Contact Lenses

Approximately 70 million people world-wide wear contact lenses. One key element of success for a lens substrate is its degree of in-eye wettability (hydrophilicity). Given this fact, it is surprising that so little data exists concerning this surface characteristic of soft contact lenses. The main reason for such lack of study might be that, up to now, there is no reliable method for measuring the in vitro wettability of soft contact lenses because they are hydrogel-based and soft. It is the goal of this study to develop a new approach to quantify the in vitro wettability of soft contact lenses. Such a repeatable in vitro, objective method will be used for determining differences between materials.
